Review Villains Like Me
Oh my goodness, Villains Like Me! What a delightful, emotional rollercoaster! As someone who already adored Kennedy Sutton's writing, this companion novel to The Sneaky Lass completely exceeded my expectations. I've always loved the dynamic between Bennett Holt and Dixon Ables, but experiencing their burgeoning relationship entirely from Bennett's perspective? Pure gold. It's a testament to Sutton's skill that even knowing the general trajectory of their story, I was still completely captivated.
The book beautifully expands on Bennett's internal struggles. We already glimpsed his inner turmoil in The Sneaky Lass, but here, Sutton gives us unfettered access to his thoughts, fears, and desires. Seeing his immediate attraction to Dixon, his internal conflict between his hardened pirate persona and his burgeoning feelings, and the way he grapples with his past traumas – it was all incredibly moving. It added so much depth to a character I already loved, making him even more relatable and sympathetic. His vulnerability, his quiet strength, his unwavering loyalty...it all shines through with such clarity.
The pacing was fantastic; the tension between the looming Goranese Navy and the unfolding romance kept me on the edge of my seat. The intimate setting of the pirate ship amplifies the emotional intensity, making the already charged atmosphere even more electric. Sutton masterfully balances the action-packed pirate adventures with the tender, slow-burn romance, creating a compelling narrative that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
And the way Sutton writes Bennett's internal monologue! It's witty, self-deprecating at times, and profoundly honest. It’s a perfect counterpoint to Dixon's narrative in the original book, offering a nuanced perspective that doesn't diminish or contradict what we already know. Instead, it enriches the overall story, creating a richer tapestry of emotion and understanding. It's like getting a sneak peek into the heart and mind of a man desperately trying to navigate his own complex feelings while also safeguarding his crew.
Even though this is a companion novel, I think it works perfectly well as a standalone read. While familiarity with The Sneaky Lass enhances the experience, Villains Like Me stands strong on its own merits. The story is compelling enough to draw in new readers, while simultaneously offering a rewarding experience for those already invested in the Silver Locket series. Whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer, this book is a must-read. Seriously, just dive in. You won't regret it. This is Kennedy Sutton at her absolute best. I'm already eagerly awaiting whatever she writes next!
